Inter and Intra-cultural Communication - LING957

This unit examines constructs of culture from theoretical and practical perspectives. The significance of the communication of cultural similarity and difference in workplace and business practice is explored. Issues of face, metaphor, verbal and non-verbal communication are analysed. The unit explores aspects of identity such as ethnicity, gender and age, and the ways that these are made relevant through communication. Discourses of power and social constructions of self and other are examined, and students are encouraged to connect the theories presented with their everyday interactions in workplaces, business, and medical and educational settings.
