Phonetics and Phonology - LING901
This unit focuses on key areas in phonetics and phonology and theoretical principles underpinning the study of speech production. Students develop an understanding of sound systems and their function in language along with crucial ear training of the sounds of the world's languages. The unit is divided into two sections. The first section examines the articulation of vowels and consonants as well as complex articulations, airstream mechanisms and laryngeal features and their use in languages. The second section focuses on fundamental theoretical issues in phonology through the practical examination of phonemes and allophones, distinctive features, syllables, word stress and intonation.
