Grammar, Meaning and Discourse - LING900

This unit focuses on the analysis of natural discourse; language as a system for meaning and wording; the relationship between language and its social context; and the constitution/shape of different discourse types. The emphasis is on discourse analytical skills, focusing on language data from a variety of social contexts. The course integrates the study of grammar, meaning and discourse and into a coherent theory of language in use. Students choose their own text/s for the major assignment, giving them the opportunity to explore a social context relevant to their own lives.
