Glocalisation and Communication Technologies - ICOM891

Recent studies have focussed on how global technologies do not always lead to inclusive communication but are more often employed to create exclusive groups. This unit deals with the dichotomy of how communication technologies that facilitate globalisation, at the same time bind people into smaller and smaller communities and groups, often times creating political and social friction. In the context of some of the discourses on globalisation, this unit details how global technologies such as the Internet are employed for narrow and sectarian needs. Multidisciplinary theories, including media and communication, political economic and cultural studies, will be drawn upon to examine the dynamics of communication technologies, globalisation and glocalisation.
