International Agreements and the Environment - GSE831

This unit is a conceptual and historical introduction to international agreements, policy and law relating to the environment. Agreements dealt with include those in the areas of climate and atmosphere; oceans and seas; biodiversity; flora and fauna; and dangerous waste materials. The current initiatives to improve the effectiveness of international environmental governance are explored. The role of NGOs, World Trade Organisation, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Global Environmental Facility influences on environmental matters is covered. Students participate in a role play to develop skills in principled negotiation.
