Judaism in the Graeco-Roman Diaspora - ECJS845
This unit studies, through literary, archaeological and epigraphic evidence, Jewish life, practice and thought in the Mediterranean Jewish diaspora. It particularly focuses on what is known about the diaspora communities, how Jews in those communities responded to living as minorities within major cities of the Roman Empire, their attitudes to Greco-Roman religion and contact with their Gentile neighbours, and how those same neighbours viewed them. This unit also provides interesting points of contact with the study of how other minorities have faced the challenge of preserving their identity while also achieving some degree of integration in their host society.
