Egypt in the First Milennium CE - AHPG856
This unit provides a detailed examination of the history of Christianity in Egypt from its origins to the end of the first millennium C.E. Beginning with the New Testament and other early Christian texts, it examines in depth the traditional account of the foundation of the Church in Egypt by Mark the evangelist; the persecutions of the 3rd and 4th centuries; the papyrological evidence for Christianity in Egypt; the schisms within Egyptian Christianity; and the Church after the Arab conquest of Egypt. Students examine ancient texts in depth, use advanced source critical techniques, and focus closely on documentary sources.
