Religious Change in the Roman Empire - AHPG833
The conversion of the Empire to Christianity brought about profound changes. This unit explores the way in which these changes affected the lives of a number of prominent figures: the Emperor Constantine and his mother Helena, the Desert Fathers (Antony and Pachomius), the Emperor Julian ('The Apostate'), Libanius of Antioch and Augustine of Hippo whose richly documented conversion had a profound effect on Christian culture. The unit gives in-depth studies of these key historical figures and others, using literary, documentary and inscriptional sources.
