RSN305: Women in Russian Culture
This is general education unit is conducted in English and no knowledge of Russian is required. The study material is designed to suit both students who want to study Russian culture in English and students who want to improve their knowledge of the Russian language. The unit examines how women of various social strata were affected by and shaped historical changes, and how women's lives are connected with broader cultural, social and political transformations. In addition to lectures, students are provided with short stories written by famous Russian writers that reflect women's experiences in Russia from the 17th century to the present. These short stories are available in English or in a simplified Russian version with Russian-English vocabulary. There is no examination at the end of this unit. Assessment is by two essays and two assignments.
