POL258: Terrorism
Terrorism has captured global attention to an extent inconceivable a few decades ago. September 11 2001 instantly became a watershed date in world history. The events, coverage and ongoing consequences of that day have made terrorism ‘closer’ than ever before for billions of people. ‘9/11’ altered international relations and national politics. Interest in terrorism and the importance of understanding it increased dramatically. But how recent a phenomenon is terrorism and what does it entail? Who are terrorists and what are their motivations? What comparisons can we draw between them? What threats do different terrorist groups pose and how are they to be combated? What role does the media play in reporting or defining terrorist activity? These and other questions will be investigated and debated in this program.
