PHL352: Gender, Race and Identity
How are categories like race and gender best understood? In what ways are race and gender, racism and sexism similar and different? How do our analyses of these categories intersect in understanding oppressive social practices and prospects for liberation? While philosophy has traditionally examined notions of human nature, our identities are more complex than is captured by the category human being. We all have gender, racial, class and sexual identities, among others. The concepts and methods developed by feminist philosophers have challenged traditional assumptions about human nature, identity and morality. Yet some feminist philosophers have been criticised for failing to attend sufficiently to other important identity markers like class, race and sexuality. In this unit we explore the philosophical implications of taking race, gender and identity seriously.
