JPS324: Manga and Anime as Global Imagery

The recent extraordinary growth in the international reception and consumption of manga and anime indicates that these once culturally specific Japanese media have spread out from their local source and now constitute diverse forms of multi-modal imagery with global reach and appeal. This unit examines the rich, diverse, kaleidoscopic imagery created through manga and anime works that are now shared by a global society. We examine what we are actually sharing, how images and culture are transplanted and morphed in the cross cultural communication process, and the role and impact of this sharing, across languages and cultures, of manga and anime. This unit is conducted in English, and no prior knowledge of Japanese language is required.
