JPS224: Manga, Anime and Representation of Identity
Manga and anime texts combine visual art forms with strong narrative driven structures that portray a diverse range of social phenomena, but a large number of works feature a particular focus on issues of individual identity. This unit provides a close examination of the rich, diverse and profound representations of identity in manga and anime, paying particular attention to the fashioning of self and the individual's quest for, and negotiation of, subjective forms of agency. No prior knowledge of Japanese language required.
