ENGL307: Creative Writing 3: Narrative Fiction

This unit focuses on narrative writing, particularly the short story in its varied forms. Students devise their writing project early in the semester; for example, 2–3 short stories or novel chapters thematically and stylistically linked. Each student then extends her/his technical and thematic creative writing skills through a regular intensive writing practice which includes the revising, rewriting, editing and workshopping of their own and others' work. The seminars include workshopping of work-in-progress. Students read and discuss contemporary and classic short stories, and consider these in relation to their individual writing process, the writer's craft, deployment of technical features, and other forms of narrative control. Topics include: narrative structure analysis; management of time; technical means of character; and scene development. By completion of the unit all students have at least two short stories or novel chapters completed. This unit also brings together into a final portfolio work completed in ENGL201 Creative Writing 1 and ENGL304 Creative Writing 2.
