DANC200: Music Theatre
Take a journey through the vast and fantabulous world of music theatre. Including the musical, this unit mixes theory and practice in lectures and workshops that investigate theatre built on movement and sound. From Broadway to burlesque, from River Dance to Marilyn Manson, from Greek choruses to Billy Elliot, from Krumping to Keating, from Mardi Gras to Gamelan, this unit creates fresh perspective and deepened understanding of a genre often undervalued and regarded as frivolous. Students consider methods of music theatre creation and appreciation. The interplay of movement and sound is investigated through a series of improvisation workshops. These workshops taught by vocal and dance lecturers allow students to create their own piece of musical theatre. No technical dance, singing or musical knowledge or experience is required.
