CHN334: Chinese History (Background Speakers)
This unit is a study of Chinese history from its earliest beginnings to modern China. Texts, lectures and assignments are in Mandarin, and a level of Chinese approximately equal to HSC for Background Speakers is required. The aim of this unit is to provide a general outline of developments in Chinese history as a background to a deeper understanding of contemporary Chinese society. The unit also covers some of the most debated issues in Chinese historical studies. All texts and lectures are in Chinese, but more difficult passages are thoroughly explained. The unit helps students improve their knowledge of Chinese, especially more advanced aspects of the spoken and written language.
