CBMS335: Medical Microbiology

This unit is concerned with the importance of micro-organisms in medicine. Topics range from the role of the normal human microflora and the body's natural defences to the disease causing organisms and their epidemiology. The unit covers medically important bacteria, protozoa, fungi and viruses. The weekly laboratory sessions provide students with the skills to handle micro-organisms safely and demonstrate the techniques used to identify pathogens in a clinical laboratory. This unit is especially valuable for students majoring in biomolecular sciences, biology and medical sciences.
