AHIS272: Ancient Egyptian Literature

This unit introduces students to the corpus of literary texts from Ancient Egypt. Students read and analyse a representative selection of primary sources in English translation. These texts cover a variety of genres ranging from tales and teachings to biographies, dialogues and satires, as well as poetry and songs. They date from the Old Kingdom (c. 2500 BC) to the Late New Kingdom (c. 1000 BC).
