PSYN808: Developmental Neuropsychology

This unit will focus on developmental changes in brain structure and function, and some of the neuropsychological abnormalities. It will include assessment, diagnosis and treatment/intervention for the behavioural and cognitive consequences of acquired damage to the previously normal developing brain, and developmental difficulties in acquiring cognitive abilities. Material covered will include embryology and CNS development after birth; hemispheric specialisation; review of normal cognitive development including sensorimotor, memory, language and problem solving; environmental influences such as family and school; paediatric neurological disorders including brain injury, cerebrovascular tumours, hydrocephalus, epilepsy, and spina bifida; developmental disorders such as autism, attention deficit disorder, nonverbal learning disability; assessment techniques; and neuropsychological intervention.
