PSY917: Therapy with Children and Families

The objectives of this unit are to provide students with knowledge of the most common environmental and contextual factors influencing the clinical presentation and treatment of children, adolescents and families. These include family dynamics, transference and counter-transference issues, inter-agency politics and agendas. Students will be provided with: skills in the clinical assessment of family dynamics including formulation and treatment plan; skills in the preparation of assessment summaries relating to children and their families; skills in the development of therapeutic alliances with children and families; and knowledge of mandated responsibilities under current child protection legislation, as well as the implications for therapeutic relationships.
