LAW856: Environmental Economics

The unit examines the role of the natural environment as an integral component of the economic system. Topics include trade-offs between environmental quality and economic growth, market failure due to environmental quality, the valuation of environmental goods and services and the formulation of environmental policies. The introduction of economic instruments as an alternative to legal enforcement mechanisms make this unit particularly important for local government practitioners.
