CBMS810: Application of Nuclear Science to Medicine

This unit provides the physics and chemistry necessary for an understanding of the choice and use of radiopharmaceuticals in biology and medicine. It covers the physics of radioactive decay, interactions of ionising radiation, detection of radiation and the imaging techniques applied in nuclear medicine, along with radiopharmaceutical design and synthesis, their biological and pharmacological evaluation and preparation for translation to the clinic under the appropriate regulatory processes. The unit also provides an overview of the effects of ionising radiation on humans, the legislative control of radiation use in Australia and the principles and procedures of radiation protection applied to radiochemistry and clinical nuclear medicine.
