SOC300: Internships in Social Research

(Orientation sessions D1: 15 February 2-4pm or 17 February 6-8pm; D2: 17 May 2-4pm or 19 May 6-8pm). This unit provides students with an exciting opportunity to gain practical experience undertaking applied or policy related research while working in a social research team or a community research setting. A practical supervised research placement, supported by on campus workshops, gives students an opportunity to undertake social research first hand and gain valuable professional experience. As well, it encourages students to exercise creative thinking and problem solving, while developing personal confidence and professional contacts. Students also learn about alternative modes of learning which take place outside the classroom. The internship is usually undertaken one or more days a week over a semester, but may, in some cases, be undertaken as a block. Placements are organised for students, in a community service agency, a commercial social research company, in state or local government, or in an academic research setting. The unit is open to all social science, arts, creative arts, media, business and health.
