SOC221: Visual Sociology
This unit considers three aspects of visual sociology: 1) History, in the work of sociologists from Bateson to Bourdieu and Elizabeth Chapmen, of the use of the camera, feature film, documentary film and visual icons and monuments in doing sociological research. Also to be considered is the way that the instruments and technologies of visual research have linked up with aesthetic concerns, as exemplified in the work of Jacques-Henri Lartigue; 2) Themes in sociological research are studied with a view to students completing a practical research project in visual sociology. These might include: studies of institutions, practices of everyday life, advertising, art and culture; and 3) Methods in visual social research are explored. Here, questions about the nature and presentation of the visual are discussed. To what extent can visual sociological research constitute an autonomous field of inquiry? To what extent is visual sociology limited by available technologies?
