SOC175: Australia and Global Societies: An Introduction to Sociology
This foundational unit introduces students to the discipline of sociology in the context of contemporary Australia and the global forces that impact on all of us. The aim is to introduce students to a way of thinking that considers human life as more than a state of mind, more than a collection of genetic predispositions, more than the actualisation of a biologically predetermined range of choices. We are social through and through. Our beliefs and values, our actions and habits, our place in the world—all this is always shaped by social and cultural phenomena and developments. We make and are made by institutions; organisations: economic and social policy; the cultural life of our societies; and the family and friendship networks to which we belong. In order to get a handle on what sociology is, and what sociologists do, we focus on some key areas of social life such as family, gender, education, religion, media, work, globalisation, and others.
