SCOM300: Science Communication in Practice

This unit uses current case studies and critical evaluations of various modes of representations of key contemporary scientific themes to review the means of representing scientific knowledge to the broad community. This unit seeks to examine and critique various methods of communication with a view to assessing their effectiveness in informing the public discourse. The various contemporary means used to represent scientific communication are critiqued and assessed for their effectiveness in portraying key scientific themes and issues. Examples are drawn from media such as film; literature; scientific texts and journals; and academic debate as well as industry portrayals of the implications of new and potential technologies for human society and ecology. These case studies are evaluated and critiqued as a key component of this unit. Through group work, specialist case studies and presentations the unit encourages students to identify effective means of conveying key themes of science and technology to the broad community.
