PSY342: Perception II

Recent research has seen a rapprochement between different approaches to the study of mechanisms of human perception, including animal neurophysiology and human psychophysics. This unit deals with a number of advanced topics of perception, concentrating on current research in vision including recent evidence for parallel processing in higher areas of human and monkey visual cortex, and recent work on the mechanisms of attention, orientation perception, and motion. It also deals with brain imaging; imaging approaches to the study of awareness and consciousness; reading; reading disability; and other perceptual disorders. Important components of the unit are a research report and a small experiment to be completed by each student.
