PHL246: Philosophy of Religion
In this unit we examine God and religion. In particular, we raise questions in three broad areas. Firstly, we examine whether or not the classical theistic portrayal of God is coherent. Can God really be omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent without any logical tensions resulting? Secondly, we analyse arguments for and against God's existence, and examine whether such arguments are even appropriate. And finally, we examine the relationship between religion and other areas of our lives. Are science and religion necessarily in conflict? What is the connection between morality and religion? How must liberal secular politics and religion interact? The unit does not presuppose any religious commitment or particular religious perspective, just a willingness to explore these questions, and others like them, in an open-minded and rigorous way.
