MUS211: Digital Rhythms and Dance Cultures

This unit examines the social, cultural and historical frameworks that have produced 20th century electronic music and its attendant dance music subcultures. The unit begins with the very earliest forays into electronic music, and moves through key innovations in its history, such as musique concrete, electronic synthesis, digital music production and turntablism. Contextual analysis of specific genres, such as Hip Hop, House, Techno and IDMs, which these technologies would both nurture and mobilise, are contextualised not only historically, but sociologically and philosophically via a diverse, interdisciplinary range of texts and readings.
