This unit addresses various compositional techniques and sound explorations that arose in the 20th century. Beginning with Debussy and moving through to the latest avant garde sound works, this unit examines key figures and movements that have shaped the evolution of contemporary music. It also addresses contemporary approaches to musical hybridity. Special consideration is paid to the development and globalisation of jazz as a modern art music.
