MMCS120: Contemporary Australian Arts

In this unit students work towards understanding the nature of artistic creativity within an Australian context and how to nurture this form of creativity. Creativity is now valued everywhere in contemporary Australian culture. But what is artistic creativity and how does it differ from other forms of creativity? What is art? How does artistic creativity give our lives direction? When one is being creative they often feel as though they are living more fully than they do during the rest of life. This unit seeks to offer students ideas that will help them to become more artistically creative. A broad range of topics and material are discussed, including: Aboriginal art; contemporary writing about the arts; performance and drama; music and sound art; visual arts; multimedia; and the economics of the arts. The unit aims to introduce the work of various creative artists and artistic fields, and allow students to produce creative works for assessment.
