MAS316: Media Futures
This capstone unit offers students an opportunity to reflect on key debates, themes and skills within the Media major, and consider ways in which those ideas and knowledges might be useful to them in the years ahead. Students participate a number of seminars across the semester. Half of these seminars are bespoke sessions run by departmental staff, departmental support staff and the Career Development Office. The other half are departmental seminars, addressing current research and practice in the discipline, which students are required to attend and review. Finally, students attend a graduate student conference which gives final year students an opportunity to meet and hear about the experiences of a range of graduates from the Media programme. Assessment for the unit includes a review of a research seminar; an academic essay identifying and analysing a key debate in media studies in relation to its significance in their future, the future of media industries, or the future of the discipline of media studies. A third assessment item is a planning document which addresses ways in which students' existing skills and knowledges might be useful in the future and ways in which they might further develop their expertise.
