LING109: Language, Culture and Communication
How does language create the society we have around us? And how does language create the possibilities for change in that society? We propose answers and illustrations to these questions with a series of separate investigations of language in the media and television; in medicine; in police and court proceedings; in literature and performance; in government and business; in the deaf community; in schools; as well as in religious expression. The unit is organised around specific, small scale tasks which, week by week, become the basis of assessment, along with a final report. The main aim of the unit is to turn students into systematic and critical observers of language in different contexts.
