LAW115: Foundations of Law
In this unit, students learn about the distinctive aspects of Common Law, Civil Law, Islamic Law, International Law and Aboriginal Laws. The unit covers topics including: the concept of the state; legal authority and its relationship to political authority; the principles underpinning representative government in Australia; the sources of law in Australia; the place of Aboriginal peoples in the Australian legal system; and the role of the core institutions of government in making, administering and interpreting the law. It also introduces students to the core legal scholarship skills of legal research, writing, reading cases and statutory interpretation, all of which are taught in an integrated manner through the semester, to support the multidisciplinary nature of the social and legal issues.
