HLTH207: Pathology 1
This unit aims to bridge the gap between the basic sciences and the clinical sciences. From a basic understanding of normal structure and function, students are introduced to the causes and effects of disturbances to 'normal'. The mechanisms by which disease may develop are then explored, with consideration of both hereditary and environmental factors. The links between disease mechanisms and their clinical manifestations is highlighted. The interactions between the mind and the body, and the possible role of the mind in the development of disease are also discussed. Focus is also placed on facilitating the students' skills in being able to derive new information from pre-existing knowledge, as a consequence of learning to access the literature, as well as by the development of a solid foundation in pathophysiological processes.
