FRN240: La presse francophone: Language and Style
This unit uses the tools of linguistics to examine how French reporters share a newspaper story with their readers. Focusing on so called faits divers (such as robberies, murders, fires, crashes, vandalism, acts of violence), it looks at who constructs the news item (apart from the journalist), how roles are distributed and how stereotypical they are, how the use of specific tenses impacts on a story. All of these, as well as puns in titles, the spread of information throughout a story and the need to avoid repetition make the language of newspapers into a genre of its own, worthy of serious linguistic investigation. The main medium of instruction is French.
