EDUC399: Professional Capability: Policy, Theory, Pedagogy

This unit ensures that students experience an appropriate synthesis of their undergraduate studies in the transition to the next stage of their careers, and that they are equipped, as far as possible, for success in that next stage. It provides the bridge between the undergraduate degree in education and the initial years of employment. Students: 1) complete professional preparation by critically reflecting on the role of the educator, and on issues of importance in professional practice. For intending teachers the focus is on the scholar teacher; 2) reflect on the development of the graduate capabilities and how these have been achieved within the degree program; 3) understand the role that jurisdictional organisations such as employing authorities, professional associations, regulatory authorities and industrial unions play in education, and their interrelationships; 4) articulate the development of personal values and ethics as an educator, specifically in relation to students, colleagues and the community; 5) understand the professional options and career pathways available to education graduates, locally and internationally, within and beyond the classroom; 6) understand the role and importance of continuing professional development and postgraduate study and research, and; 7) prepare a personal professional learning e-portfolio demonstrating aspects of the above.
