In the nineteenth century capital exploited children's labour. Now, it exploits their desires' (Langer, 2004, p158) In this unit we address such issues as the fairness or otherwise of television marketing directed at children. We discuss the meaning of television violence and analyse the assumptions behind regulating children's television. We look at historical changes in the production of children's television by working with a wide range of texts. The unit is designed to introduce students to various concepts and theories useful in media studies.
