ECHL111: Elements of Drama
This unit is an introduction to the elements of drama and theatre and reflections on how different cultures have used these elements within their communities. The unit begins with an examination of ritual (traditional and contemporary) and its relationship to performance, focusing on such elements as story, movement/dance, costume/mask, sound/music and dramatic structure. Lectures and workshops cover movement, sound, improvisation, text analysis, character development, and the role of the actor, director, designer and writer. Students develop skills in the critical assessment of play production; gain an overview of current theatre practice in Australia and how it impacts on various communities, and study a range of contemporary plays from around the globe.
