ECH432: Issues in Early Childhood Developmental Literacy

This unit builds further understanding of English as a language of communication through reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and representing experience, ideas and values; as well as strengthening students' understanding of ways in which young children acquire skills, knowledge and attitudes related to these literacies. The unit includes: analysis and assessment of early reading and writing development; approaches to working with literary, factual and multimedia texts; and literacy programming options for children in prior-to-school and school based group settings. It builds on understandings of effective adult strategies for fostering development of literacy as social practice; support for children experiencing difficulties making progress in literacy; and issues related to social justice and critical literacies. It also enables students to demonstrate their understanding of the rationale for using integrated approaches to early literacy programs. Students plan appropriate individual and group literacy programs for children in varied early childhood settings, based on detailed literacy profiles, and investigate current literacy topics including the philosophies underlying the New South Wales English K-6 document
