ECH230: Human Society: Understanding Diversity

This unit is presented in four modules, lasting 2–3 weeks each. In the first module, students explore theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of the New South Wales Human Society and its Environment Foundation Statements and syllabus. The second module provides opportunities for students to develop critical awareness of their own approaches to learning and how this might impact on professional choices with regard to curriculum content. The third module presents students with alternative pedagogical approaches to the study of human society and its environment, with a view to promoting the use of multiple methods in implementing units of study. In the fourth module, we consider issues that are of contemporary concern for Australian society, and links to global changes. In the final week of semester, we reflect on the unit as a whole and its application in students’ personal and professional lives.
