CUL326: Somatechnics of Medicine and Bioscience
Somatechnics is a term that was coined to demonstrate the inextricability of bodies and technologies: the fact that bodies are always shaped by the ideas and practices specific to a given culture. In this unit we examine the medicalisation of everyday life. By exploring a range of cultural texts such as television shows (The Biggest Loser, Extreme Makeover, etc) and press reportage, magazine articles and websites dealing with recent cases such as Octomom and the Pregnant Man, we investigate the ways medical technologies and practices work to enhance, modify, categorise, regulate and productively transform bodies.
