CUL324: Multimedia: The Poetics of New Media

This unit explores the relationship between technology, embodiment and culture with reference to a range of technologies, their appeal (sensory, affective, intellectual, spiritual) to individual embodied subjects; the ways in which they are deployed; and the assumptions mobilising the technology itself. The technologies range from digital multimedia, to Cute Circuit's HugShirt (a t-shirt that can hug the wearer) to the U.S. Army's Future Warrior combat uniform. The kinds of questions we explore are: Will technologies that deploy the human senses actually change those senses and thus what it means to be human? If human societies have always developed along with technology, should we be concerned about the kinds of technology we use? If children grow up with robot carers, will they become like robots? Should technology always be visible and detectable, or are there times and places where it should be invisible?
