CUL232: Seducing the Lens: Theories of screen performance

What is good film acting? And what is behind such value judgements? This unit investigates a range of theories and practices concerning acting for the screen. As students learn about some of the training associated with 20th century screen acting, they study films and explore how screen performances embody implicit ideas about acting and, simultaneously, ideas about the human subject. During the unit, students meet a professional film actor and director, thereby learning about the relationship between the pragmatics of day-to-day screen acting practice and more formal acting knowledge. In taking the unit, students are not required to perform, however some tutorials are workshop based.
