CHN242: Chinese Literature from Hong Kong and Taiwan

Reading and examining the selected works, this unit traces a genealogy of writing from Hong Kong and Taiwan from the early 1920s until now. These short stories, novel, poetry and prose represent not only a great diversity of styles of Hong Kong and Taiwan writers, but also some major themes in the literary development of the two places. The primary goal of the unit is to introduce students to the representative literary work of the two regions with historical and socio-political analysis. Upon completing this course, students are expected to: 1) attain a general view of the development of literature in Hong Kong and Taiwan; and 2) show their understanding of the works through analysing the themes and topics, style and literary skills.
