CHN208: Intermediate Chinese for Background Speakers I

This unit in standard Mandarin is for students who have passed HSC Chinese Background Speakers or CHN156 The Chinese Cultural Heritage. It is also suitable for students who have completed a major part of their secondary education in Chinese. It introduces students to various aspects of Chinese culture, history, philosophy and contemporary Chinese scholarship. Students are expected to prepare each text before class. In class students read aloud from the text, and discuss their own reactions to it. Any difficulties in understanding vocabulary, usage or cultural background should be directed to the lecturer, who also leads the class in discussion of the text. All classes and discussions are in Mandarin. Essays should be written in the simplified script in a style appropriate for an academic essay.
