AHIS279: Egyptian Hieroglyphs B

This unit familiarises students with the terminology and methodology of text interpretation and literary criticism. The special characteristics and problems regarding the study of an ancient literature are identified. The issues of literacy in Egyptian society, of oral and written transmission of texts, the question of authorship and the role of literature in culture are discussed. Definitions and approaches to the study of literature and genres are presented and assessed. The texts are studied in their social and cultural context. Formal aspects of the texts, genre and style, as well as the themes are explored. The goal is to reach both a historical understanding of the ancient literary texts and, for the modern reader, to meet the challenge and come to an appreciation of the imagination and ideas of the Ancient Egyptians.
