PSYC896: History and Theory in Psychology
This unit consists of two parts. The first explores the philosophical and scientific presuppositions of psychology. An examination of the historical roots of modern psychology with a view to critiquing current models of psychology is undertaken. The second part of the unit explores issues related to the role of theory and conceptual analysis in modern psychology. Major concepts within psychology are examined (e.g. behaviour, cognition and motivation), and common weaknesses in psychological arguments identified with an aim to developing critical thinking skills.
