LAW894: Human Rights and Moral Dilemmas
The aim of this unit is to explore the intersections between law and morality by analysing human rights cases drawn from a variety of jurisdictions -- Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe and South Africa - which raise topical and controversial moral issues. Topics covered will include hate speech, pornography, religious symbols in state schools, multiculturalism and gender, prostitution and privacy, anti-terrorism legislation and the enforcement of socio-economic rights. Students will gain an understanding of the moral choices which inform and underlie legal choices as well as an ability to evaluate and critique them.
