LAW867: Water and Marine Biodiversity Law

This unit evaluates a wide range of approaches to water and marine biodiversity governance and the efforts of the global community with respect to enforcement and compliance. The first half of this unit examines the principles that govern the ecologically sustainable use and management of freshwater resources at both the international and domestic level. The second half of this unit examines law and policy relating to the protection and preservation of the marine living resources. Specific attention will be given to fisheries management (global, regional, national and local governance), species-based approaches (whales and sharks) and habitat protection (such as the deep-sea bed and Antarctica). Cross cutting issues will be explored including the challenge of integrating conservation and utilisation of freshwater and marine biodiversity.
